The new information suggests that PS3 will incorporate four XDR-DRAM chips, for a total of 256MB of main RAM, considering PS2 sports 32MB of much slower RAM, it is easy to see what kind of a performance jump Sony are aiming for.
That's a significant change. I wonder if it'll even take advantage of that performance and produce what the ps2 was supposed to deliver.
2005 seems so far away, and that's just speculation.

they say probably not, because the "cell chip" wont be ready for when sony plans to launch the ps3/coffee maker/toaster etc etc

I'm afraid that's the problem. Sony claims yet again, that the ps3 will replace my home entertainment setup, yet in the end provides a console like any other.
Apparently now they're living up to the originally promise of the ps2 by releasing the psx(the white playstation 2 that can burn dvds, has a harddrive, and some other stuff).
Maybe I should skip the ps3 release date and wait for the X version.

im also very excited about the psx (although hopefully some of its features can be implemented to the old models we already have via mermory card drivers of some sort) anyway heres more detailed info on it http://www.gamers.com/news/1391011

na it wont really matter as long as backwards compatibility is still in tact.
