Chrono Trigger better on Zsnes or Snes9x?

I've decided to sit down and play through Chrono Trigger this summer. My question is, would I have a better experience using Zsnes or Snes9x? I've always relied upon Zsnes before, but I just discovered Snes9x which seems to have much better graphics. I notice that Zsnes seems to render the audio more faithfully though.

Which one do you recommend?

This is an age-old debate.
In my experience, the graphics and sound are almost indescernable between the two. When it comes to graphics, the advantages are ZSNES has interpolation, while SNES9X has 3DFX and openGL modes.
Otherwise they have the same graphical options.
Either way you're going to have a very good gaming experience, assuming of course they run smoothly on your computer.

Actually, now i am beginning to notice that Zsnes is Falling behind Snes9x except in the Audio department in some games.

Last time I tried using snes9x it sucked, but ZSNES sounds and looks better than snes9x on my comp

the ZSNES work even on my small .98 gb and 64 mb ram and a pentium 90 in my bedroom but the other just fu*cked it up..

Yeah ZSNES doesn't need quite as good a computer to run, but other than that there's not a whole lot of difference between the two. They're both very good.

just get both as they have advantages over each other in certain games
example - zsnes gives me a horrible pixalleted screen in super metroid but not on snes9x

Yes and last night I discovered another, very aggrivating difference. On ZSNES when I play weaponlord and try to go to a VS match, it locks up after the character select. On SNES9X it has no problem, but ZSNES has better screen-capturing options and I want to rip the sprites from that game.

I've concluded that snes9x has a greater graphical advantage over zsnes . . . the swinging pendulum at the beginning of Chrono looks must less pixelated on snes9x.

Still, I'm brooding over the sound. I own both Star Fox and Kirby 3 on my SNES, so I could immediately distinguish the sound differences on the emulators. You can hear the digitized voices on Snes9x, whereas in Zsnes it's a bunch of garble. But although Kirby 3 actually sounds more pleasant on Snes9x, the sound from Zsnes perfectly matches the sound from my TV.

I wonder if that's because Snes9x seems to take advantage of SB Live and converts the raw sound into something surpassing 16-bit hardware. I think the reason why the opening of Chrono sounds nicer on the Snes9x is because the music sounds like its coming from a real piano rather than a synthesized one.

I think I'm going to go with Snes9x for Chrono, and Zsnes for everything else (since I can't seem to part from my longtime emulator either :P )

Lately ZSNES, especially the windows version, has been doing some very mean things to windows for me. For some reason if I run it for more then a minute or two windows starts having trouble running out of memory and displays ASCII characters in place of graphical items.
It has nothing to do with the amount of RAM I have since I have 256 MBs...

Snes9x is great... I never have problems with it....

zsnes dos is great..

yet for me.. zsnes windows sucks.. cause.. well only when i have the screen at tinyxtiny resolution and i have to change mine to see it at 640*480.. its when I want to resize it... the game would.. skip.. and skip and skip...

its like.. they say they been sharing code with each other.. (where did i read that from..??.. zophar..??... BLAH BLAH BLAH).. but.. :p doesn't seem like it to me.. after all.. Snes9x is better..hehe

so.. you do like Snes9x more now..

Yes, it's me, the guy who started the post. :)

Well, after a few weeks of evaluations I'm actually leaning towards Zsnes now. I am positive now that 9x unfaithfully translates the audio compared to Zsnes. For example, Zelda's music is much closer to the original in Zsnes than 9x. However, 9x continues to be better at decoding digitized voice.

9x also has greater compatibility with games. Wrestlemania Arcade won't work on Zsnes, but will on 9x. The other advantage is its graphic capabilities: look at how pixelated DKC on Zsnes compared to 9x.

Still, I think audio is important enough for me to stick w/ Zsnes. My biggest gripe with it though is it keeps changing the resolution on my monitor whenever I run it . . . I think it's actually starting to damage my monitor since there's this highpitch whining sound coming from it nowadays.

Put it this way man.. I've been using zsnes since .400.. (i still say best update was .800).. and when i got 9x i converted..

when I had my 486/66.. zsnes ran great.. i mean no problems.. i had problems with 9x.. so thats why i kept running it..

yet now since i have my newer system...(im not going to start a bragging contest here.. i'll keep it to myself).. i mean.. 9x seems its better than zsnes.. i mean.. no problems or anything like that...

its like.. if your at the lower end.. zsnes will give you the smoothest frameskips you can possbly get.. unlike 9x where it may lag & skip & not run smooth...

if your at the higher end.. you may like 9x better because it supports voodoo & other things also.. i mean if you have a voodoo the enhancements are great :eek:

in the near end.. its up to the users computer.. except if your runnng me.. then your scr3w3d..

oh yeah.. reason for windows zsnes... could it be because of the dos suport on me..hehehehe :D

Alright, what Doomx said has been one of the more sensible things said so far.
As for Donkey Kong Country looking better y2kev, do you really, really want me to post 2 MORE screenshots of a game to prove that the graphics are the FRICKIN SAME??? I've already done it with 2 games.
I will say once more the differences between SNES9X and ZSNES:

Graphics - They are identical between the two except that ZSNES has an interpolation mode and SNES9X has opengl/glide support.

Sound - ZSNES tends to have slightly superior sound, with a slightly better ambient effect

Compatibility - Don't try to compare the two here. They both have very, very high compatibility, and it's very very close to being the same on both. There are games that work only on ZSNES and games that work only on SNES9X. Trust me. I've actually gone through every fricking english SNES game.

System requirements: Without a doubt ZSNES will generally run smoother on most computers and takes less system requirements. The windows version is USUALLY slightly slower but there have been cases where it was as fast or faster then the DOS version. SNES9X requires a bit more system power then ZSNES, but not by a wide margin.

Controls - SNES9X and ZSNESwin both have directinput support, but SNES9X's is currently superior as it supports analog axes and there are buttons I've seen not work in ZSNESwin but work in SNES9X. ZSNES DOS has the worst controller support, which is still somewhat decent, but of course lacks USB capability (unless you use a profiler of some type).

Options - ZSNES is the current ruler here, with many, many things configurable from within the GUI. There are occasional things you can only do on SNES9X but ZSNES has more options.

If you have any debates with any of these I will try my best to prove them.

Well put, Mink. I use both. I use ZSNES when I want to play one of my games with better sound. I use Snes9x when I want a clearer picture of the game.
