I remember playing an old arcade game, but I don't know the name of it. I know it was something like castlevania, where its a 2d sidescrolling thing where you're a dude with an ax or something like that, but when u beat a level you would get higher and higher in the castle. anybody remember this one? if you don't know, then please please at least help me brainstorm. thank you very very much for any help you can give me!

the game your talking about is castlevania, you can find this in NEs, SNES, Gensis,PSX and some other systems. It is a very famous serie, so get it now!
Edit: sorry, i thought you said you think it's castlevania. Can you tell us if you remeber what company made it how good graphic it has and stuffs like that?

no, i play castlevania rather frequently and that is definitely not it. this is something else. i know it sounds a lot like castlevania, but it isn't.
all i remember is everytime you finished a level it showed you going to a higher level of the castle, like on a little walkway or battlement or something. it wasnt the thing in castlevania where you look at him on the little map and his image slides to the next area. i'm talking about a guy walking, actually walking, like in the regular level, across a battlement or something to the next area. thanks

hmmm... graphics seem similar in quality to strider, but the characters are smaller like they usually are in castlevania. does that help at all?

I think you're talking about Magic Sword. It was made by Capcom and was ported to SNES. Do you get allies in that game that walk with you? If so, I'm pretty sure it's Magic Sword.

I think it's Knights of the round as well...
Did it have a horse powerup in it?? If it did, it's knights of the round.

OK, i tried knights of the round last night, pretty sure thats not it. that seems more final fight-ish, where the game i'm talking about is more pure 2d sidescrolling. ill try magic sword or whatever it was tonight.

magic knight was also made on the CPS-1, that's why it's ported. If, you don't fill satisfied by the SNES version, try the Callus version(or what ever emulator you played knight of the round arcade on).
