how does Zsnes network feature work?

I use zsnes dos version for snes, i know of the net features, but never used them. I want to use it to play a game of secret of mana with a friend. How does it work, will I be able to chat with him? and can start from my save and him join in, or do I need to send him the save state?

Yeah you can chat during it, but I don't know how save states would work
Wait wait, don't use the DOS version's netplay, it's beta and hardly ever works
Use the windows version of ZSNES that works way better and has the chat option

thanks, I have the windows version some place on my computer, but i'll just get the updated version i think mine a bit old.
