Project64 is a well-rounded emulator, but as with most N64 emus, you're going to need a somewhat fast computer in order to fully enjoy the experience it can provide. Minimum requirements include a PIII @ 700 MHz and 128 MB of RAM. I'm assuming the majority of you will be fine, but for those of you that are not, do not expect this emu to run even well if at all.
As for emulation, it works well when it gets up and running. Mario64 ran perfectly on my system, but apparently, the emu is very picky. It does not run well with Matrox cards, ATI Rage Pros, or Voodoo Banshee, 1, and 2 video cards.
Give this emulator a shot, as it is a very good one, but if it doesn't work for you, move on to another. Claims to work on a 700 MHz or more. I use to use it on my 866 with no problem.

A very good, often overlooked N64 emulator. It is almost on par with Project64 and can beat it out on certain occasions since it has lower system specs. Can also do more things like take screenshots. Worth a try and be sure to load the extra graphics/sound packs!

This is an average emulator that has a simple GUI. It emulates a decent amount of roms.
It's biggest plus point is that's it has been made as a multi-OS emulator.

This emulator is far behind compared to the better Project64 and 1964 emulators. It runs very few games and the keyboard controls leave alot to be desired and there is no gamepad support. The settings menu lack alot of options so you're not in full control of the setup.
